Projector placement & simulation — user manual
- 1Getting started
Throwcast is a projector placement and simulation tool. You build the venue, hang projectors in it, and it tells you what the light actually does — image size, coverage, pixel density, illuminance, and where two machines overlap.
- 2The editor
One window, two side panels and a viewport. The rule that decides what goes where is simple: the left panel is what exists in the project, the right panel is the properties of the one thing you have focused, and settings that belong to neither float over the viewport.
- 3Building the venue
Before a projector means anything you need something for it to hit. Throwcast gives you two families of geometry — surfaces, which are screens, and objects, which are everything else — plus imported CAD. And when none of those is the shape you need, §3.7 onwards is the other way in: put the architect’s drawing in the venue, scale it to life, and trace what you actually have to build.

A projector in Throwcast is a body, a lens and a handful of numbers. Get those right and everything downstream — coverage, blending, the heatmap, the reports — follows.
- 5Blend arrays
A blend array is a parametric rig of projectors: clone one machine into a grid or a ring, overlap them by a stated percentage, and keep driving that shape for the life of the project.
- 6Simulation
Two pictures of the same physics: a false-colour map of how much light lands where, and a preview of the actual image. Both are real-time, and neither needs baking.
- 7The device library
The Device tab answers a different question from the rest of the app: not where is this machine, but what is this machine.
- 8Cables and the diagram
Projectors and devices carry typed ports. Join two and a cable appears — in the 3D scene, in the schematic, in the length totals, and in the reports.
- 9Cable trays
A tray is a network: points joined by straight stretches, each drawn as the open-top U-channel it is. One connected run is one object — bend it, extend it, branch it from its points — and a cable attached to it routes itself.
- 10Racks
A rack is a container: a 19-inch or 10-inch frame whose only job is to hold devices at discrete U positions and move them as one.
- 11Views and reports
A saved view is a camera you can come back to. A report is a set of composed pages that export to PDF — the deliverable a client actually receives.
